Xiu Xiu (plus support by I Am Fya)
'One of underground music's consistently brilliant anomalies.' Pitchfork
Formed in 2002, Xiu Xiu (Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart) are an American experimental rock band from San Jose, California.
With a back catalogue spanning over 20 years, they have never shied away from topics that are meaningful to them, from gender dysphoria and suicide, to abortion politics and queer life. Their songs are about specific events in the personal lives of the band, the people close to them, and about the social and economic politics that affect and deform life everywhere on this wobbling, wreck of a solar system. But somehow within all of this, cuteness finds a way to embrace death and horrible emotion.
Their music is drawn from British post punk and synth pop, modern Western classical, noise and experimental genres, Asian percussion, American folk, house, techno and 1950s rock n roll.
Xiu Xiu have been called 'self flagellating', 'harsh', 'brutal', 'shocking' and 'perverse' but also 'genius', 'brilliant', 'unique', 'imaginative' and 'luminous'.
